Detecting Mold in Your Home

An obvious mold problem

How can I tell if I have mold in my house?

If you can actually see surface mold, or if there is an earthy or musty odor, you can assume you have a mold problem. Allergic individuals may experience the symptoms listed on our Health Effects page. Look for previous water damage. Visible mold growth is found underneath materials where water has seeped into surfaces, or behind walls. Look for discoloration and swelling on sheet rock or plaster walls.

Water -even clean water - wetting paper, fabric or wood based materials in a heated room will nearly always begin to grow mold within a short time. So if it’s been wet for more than 48 hours mold spores are germinating-though you may not yet see surface mold.

Should I test my home for mold?

It is generally not necessary to consider testing as the first step to determine if you have a mold problem. Reliable sampling for mold can be fairly expensive, and requires equipment and know-how from specially trained and licensed pros. Residents of individual private homes must pay to carry out such sampling, as it is seldom offered by public health agencies. Mold cleanup is considered a housekeeping responsibility of a private citizen or business owner, similar to roof and plumbing repairs, sweeping and window cleaning. It may be covered by insurance if it results from covered recent water damage. For a serious or extensive mold problem you should visit with your insurance agent to understand if coverage exists for any recent water damage and subsequent mold incident.

Another issue is that there are few available standards for judging what is an acceptable quantity of mold. In any location, there is some outdoor air mold level. If sampling is carried out, an outdoor air sample must be taken at the same time as the sample taken indoors. These two samples determine a baseline measurement. Since the sensitivity of individuals to mold varies so greatly, sampling is at best a general guide.
